Sacred Bow Forest: ( Thiruverkkadu )

Since Balambigai blessed Muruga with bow and spear at this place it is called Thiruvilkkadu.

Reason for giving bow and spear to Muruga

There was one worst demon called by name Surapadman ( Lion head Demon ).  Singamugasuran and Taragasuran  stood by his side and they are symbol of universal evil. They tortured good peoples, sadus and saints. They also imprisoned Indiran, the chief of Devas. Everywhere there were hue and cries. The saints in the fire of torture prayed and represented to three eyed god ( Lord Siva) . He appeared and blessed them  that his son Murugan  would redress all their hardships. Lord Muruga moved by these prayers went to Thiruverkadu to seek the grace of his mother and blessings of his father. Mother
Parvathy consolidated all her powers and gave it in the form of shining spear with the blessings of Lord Siva.

Velayutha Theertham

To divinely cleanse the spear he scratched the ground with it. Immediately water sprang up from that place. Lord Siva was happy with the bathe of divine water of Karthigeyan. He blessed Muruga that the water source created by Lord Muruga would  hereafter be called "Velayutha Theertham" and it would remove the evils of the devotees. Now the Velayutha Theertham stands in the form of a well. Then Kanda Peruman got the blessings of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathy and proceeded to kill Surapadman.
