Thiruvenpakkam is one of the places in Tamil Nadu Praised in Thevaram

Old temple was at Thiruvilamputhur .Thiruvilamputhur is also called Pathri Karanyam.Since this area was full of jujubee tree it is called by that name .There are many inscriptions in this temple which belongs to the 11th century B.C

Thiruvilamputhur is one of the places taken over by Government in 1942 when it was decided to construct a dam across Kusasthalai  river. When the dam was constructed and it became a reservoir .ThiruvilamPuthur was  called as Venpakkam. Now it is called Poondi Reservoir. When the reservoir was constructed this temple was removed from this place and was built in a new place and consecration was performed on 5.7.1968. This information is seen in an inscription kept in Amman Sannidhi.

Here only Sundarar was given Walking Stick by the god. Sundarar came here along with his followers in blind condition and went round the temple and asked God where are you .God of Thiruvenpakkam (Lord Sivan) gave him the walking stick and told him I am here only: you can go now. On hearing these words Sundarar felt humiliated for being treated like third person and sang  Thiru Pathiharm

        God Oondreeswarar

      Goddees Minnoli Ammai

Since God gave walking stick to sundarar, he was called Oondreeswarar. When Sundarar was approaching Venpakkam Ambal appeared like lightning and guided his way and disappeared. So she is called Minnoli Ammai.

There is no east Raja Gopuram (Temple tower) in this temple. Once you enter into the temple you can see Amman Sannidhi facing south. Swami Sannidhi is facing east. There is no flag staff  in
this temple. Once you cross the entrance a beautiful stone mandabam can be seen. Nandhi and alter are at elevated places. Sun God and Nine Plannet Sannidhis are at the left hand side.

Four Siva Saints ,Bairawar and Arunagirinathar Sannidhis are at right hand side. Nearer to this are God Natarajar with Sivagami and Manickavasagar. By the side of this you can see Festival idols (Urchavars) of Prathosa Nayagar,Subramaniyar, Valli ,Deivayanai, Somasundarar etc.  Minnoli Ammai is here in standing Posture with four hands and blesses every one. By the side of  moolavar sannidhi you can see Dwara GanaPathi and Subramanyar

Moolavar Thirumani Avoodaiyar is at low level. At the opposite side you can see Nandhi without right side horn. When Sundarar prayed God for eye sight, God gave him only walking stick.  So in his anger he threw away the stick and it hit Nandhi and it lost it right side horn. This is only a hear-say information. You can see the idol of Sundarar  with closed eyes standing by the side of Nandhi facing God.

Behind the Moolavar five metal idols of Swami and Amman can be seen. In the inner corridor you can see separate Sannidhis for Vinayagar ,Lingorpavar,Bhramma and Durgai remaining as moorthangal. There is Sandeeswarar Sannidhi also. Copies of Inscriptions found in Thiruvilamputhur were taken and fixed here.

These inscriptions belong to the period of first Raja Rajan .The name of the God is inscriped here as "JayanKonda Chola Mandala,Eakkadu Kotta ,Perumoor nattu Odaiyar ,Thiruvulam BohiNayanar." In these inscriptions the following are mentioned.
